From distupd at lists.ndlcms.org Wed Aug 3 13:44:29 2005 From: distupd at lists.ndlcms.org (District Updates) Date: Wed, 03 Aug 2005 18:44:29 -0000 Subject: [DistUpd] August 3 Message-ID: Update for August 3 A publication of the Nebraska District, a District ABLAZE! Greetings in the name of the Lord, who tells us we are "the light of the world" and we are to "let [our] light shine before men, that they may . . . praise [our] Father in heaven." (Matt. 5:14, 16) What a tremendous honor and responsibility Christ gives us with this statement. The Lord uses us to shine His light to those around us in our families, neighborhoods, and communities. Nearly 650 members of the Nebraska District are planning to gather together Saturday to hear and discuss ways God is using His people in the mission fields He has placed them in. Prairie Fire promises to be a day filled with time in God's Word, fellowship, and resourcing to help all those in attendance return to their congregations and communities "on fire" for the Lord and for the work in His mission field. * Prayer Requests * Prairie Fire Participant Details * August Teachers' Retreat Registration Deadline is TODAY! * State Fair Worship Service Location and Time Change * Pastoral Care Specialist Course Being Offered by LFS * Concordia Publishing House Warehouse Sale Dates * Concordia Jr/Sr High School Breaks Ground for New Football Field * High School Actors Needed for Youth Gathering * Fall Junior High Retreat at Camp Luther PRAYER REQUESTS George Duchow - Joyce Gierke, wife of Pastor Charles Gierke of St. Mark, Omaha, has shared the following prayer request for her brother, George. He has had malignant tumors removed from his brain and his left lung and now the latest MRI showed a pea-sized anomaly in his head on the side opposite from where he had the first tumor. After George has another scan, the surgeon will determine whether to remove it also or begin radiation and chemotherapy treatments. Please pray for guidance for the medical technicians and for patience for George, who has been recovering well from his two previous surgeries. Back to top PRAIRIE FIRE PARTICIPANT DETAILS It's getting closer! The Nebraska District Prairie Fire Event is this Saturday, August 6, on the campus of Concordia University in Seward. Preparations continue to be made to ensure this event is a blessing to all who attend. As of today, there are over 630 brothers and sisters in Christ registered to attend. Thanks be to God! As we finalize many of the logistical details for the day, we would urge participants to carpool with others from their congregation or community to help alleviate parking congestion on campus. All parking areas of the campus will be open for our use that day. Signs indicating staff or student parking may be disregarded for the event and participants may park in any lot. Handicapped parking spaces should still be respected. There will also be volunteers available on campus that day to help direct you. A map of Concordia's campus with the parking areas marked is available on the District website at http://www.ndlcms.org/news/conferences/prairie_fire/index.html. Participants may wish to print this map and bring it with them to show them the parking areas across campus. Please do NOT park in any of St. John's church parking, as they have an event as well that day. One change from last year is the location of the Opening Celebration. This year, we will hold the Opening Celebration and Time of Sending in the gymnasium on Concordia's campus. Participants are encouraged to register in the lobby of the Thom Leadership Education Center (TLEC) between 8:30 a.m. - 9:45 a.m., and make their way over to the gym to be seated by 10:00 a.m. Please remember, with an event of this size we will need to use most of the buildings on Concordia's campus and there will be some walking involved, so please make necessary arrangements to allow you to enjoy your day. Back to top AUGUST TEACHERS' RETREAT REGISTRATION DEADLINE IS TODAY! The deadline for registering for the August Teachers' Retreat is TODAY, August 3. Registration information was sent to each principal and director in early July and they were asked to register their staff. The Retreat will be held next Tuesday, August 9, on Concordia University's campus. Please help us get meal counts and print materials ready by registering for this event today. Online registration is available through http://www.ndlcms.org/news/conferences/teacher-retreat.html until midnight tonight. After that, please mail your completed registration form and check to the District Office as soon as possible and before Friday, August 5. "Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good; His love endures forever." Psalm 107:1 God is very good and we give Him thanks for the blessings He showered on the participants and presenters at Prairie Fire last Saturday. The Lord gave us perfect weather in August (which means it wasn't too hot!), He granted safety to all who traveled to and from the event, and His Spirit was truly present among the 650 people who gathered that day. Thank you to all who attended this event on Concordia's campus, and thank you to all who helped as presenters, hosts, or other volunteers. The Lord truly blessed the day and all those in attendance, both participants and staff. It was wonderful being there with all of you and feeling your excitement about the ministry opportunities God has given you in your congregations and communities. We pray you will be able to take back what you heard to your congregations and share with others the new ideas and insights for ministry you gained. * Prayer Requests * Thank Yous * Omaha Area Clergy Invited to Meet with Mayor * Omaha Preschool Looking for Teachers * Equipping to Share Workshops Across the District * Family Life Marriage Seminar * Mission Fest at Mission Central * Living for Tomorrow is Coming to Nebraska * Heartland Conference for Rural Ministry * National Bioethics Conference Planned * 2005 Wheat Ridge Christmas Seals Available PRAYER REQUESTS Ethan and Steve Marshall - Good news! Ethan is now back home, his infection having cleared up. He is still having issues with his blood pressure, but they are working on that. The biopsy on the lump they removed from Steve's lung turned out to be negative, and he is recovering well. He is now back on the list as a possible donor. Ethan's mom, Melanie, was also bumped up to possible donor status. Surgery is tentatively scheduled (with either mom or dad's kidney) for late September. The family thanks you for all your prayers! Sarah Nicole Gierke - We give thanks for this gift of new life given to the son and daughter-in-law of Rev. Charles and Joyce Gierke of St. Mark, Omaha. We thank God that mother and child are doing fine and we look forward to welcoming this little one into the family of believers through her baptism. Nigerian Missionaries - Missionaries Jerry and Carol Loewe in Nigeria have shared this prayer request with us. Please remember these fellow co-workers in the mission field in your prayers. Last Wednesday there was a terrible car accident. LBT (Lutheran Bible Translator) missionaries Ed and Wilma Rupprecht and long term volunteer missionary Ron Lange were hit head-on by a car passing a truck on a curve. God used seat belts, air bags and a heavy duty car to save their lives. The four Anglican pastors in the passing car were killed. Wilma was driving and has sprained ankles, lots of bruises and pain that the Lord has provided medicine to help deaden. Ed has a couple of broken ribs the x-rays do not show but he feels them. Ron can lie down but moves very slow up and down. We have fixed up an infirmary here on the compound. We are taking shifts caring for them. We ask for your prayers for healing, strength and comfort for the surviving families of the men in the other car and wisdom to deal with authorities in Nigeria. Yvonne Greunke - We join with Rev. Martin and Yvonne Greunke at the completion of Yvonne's chemotherapy treatments. She shares the following update and prayer request with us. Praise the Lord for seeing me through all this with as little adverse effects as possible. Thanks for all the prayers that have sustained me all this time. Of course I am not done with treatments, as I will be starting radiation soon. I will receive treatments every day for six weeks once they start. Thanks again for keeping me going with all the prayers, cards, calls, and concern expressed throughout these past four months of treatment. Keep them coming as they are so appreciated. Thanks, Yvonne Greunke Family of Selma Malotky - Please remember in prayer the family of Mrs. Selma Malotky, widow of Pastor Harold Malotky, of Utica. Selma was called to the Lord's side Sunday, August 7. The funeral service will be at 10:00 a.m. at St. Paul, Utica. We pray that the Lord will grant comfort and strength to the family at this time of earthly loss and hope in His promise of an eternal reunion at Jesus' side. The complete obituary is available at http://www.ndlcms.org/news/obituaries/index.html for those who did not receive it. Back to top THANK YOUS As many of you may know, this year marks the 25th year of ordination for President Sommerfeld and the 45th year of ordination for Rev. Dr. Marvin Bergman, Nebraska District Lay Leadership Program Coordinator. These anniversaries were observed with letters from co-workers and congregations across Synod, as well as an evening with friends, family, and members of the District staff and Board of Directors. Following are words of appreciation for all that was done to make this observance special. "Thanks be to God! I am thanking God for the many letters, cards and thoughtful notes I received from congregations, individuals, pastors, teachers, principals, DCEs, music directors and others throughout Nebraska in observance of my 25th anniversary of ordination. It was humbling to be blessed in this way. The evening of memories, laughter, kind words, and songs of praise by the Sudanese singers hosted by the Nebraska District Staff and Board of Directors was most appreciated, as was the original pectoral medallion cross created by Concordia University Art Professor Ken Schmidt." - President Russ Sommerfeld Rev. Bergman also expressed thanks and gratitude for the kind words and thoughts shared with him by many he has worked side-by-side with during his 45 years of ministry. A number of missionaries will be present, as this will be a concluding part of Brent Friedrich's wedding celebration. Back to top HEARTLAND CONFERENCE FOR RURAL MINISTRY Representatives from seven districts gathered July 8 and 9 at the new leadership training center on the campus of Saint Paul Lutheran High School, Concordia, Missouri. Identified as the Heartland Conference, the meeting's purpose was threefold: * Critique and prioritize the four leadership modules under development through SPIFE designed specifically for rural/small town congregations; * Examine the role Saint Paul Institute for Education (SPIFE) can play in working regionally, across districts lines, to partner in serving rural/small town congregations throughout the heartland of America; and, * Formulate a next step for partnership implementation in each district. Number one on the priority list is "Culture - WE CAN: Pastor and People Planning Big in Rural America." This module is scheduled to be ready to implement throughout the heartland by September 1. Watch this publication and the District website for more information as this becomes available for congregations in rural/small town ministry. To stay abreast of leadership module development and scheduling, you may also go to www.spife.org . Some of this technology can be used for wonderful things, and some of this technology can be used for incredibly evil outcomes," said Maggie Karner, director of Life Ministries with LCMS World Relief and Human Care. "As Christians, we need to know the facts about what's in the news and what's on the horizon so we can be witnesses of light and hope in this darkened culture." Topics include: "Arguing About Embryos," "The Sanctity of Life in the Biotech Industry" and "Bioethics: Creating a Caste of Disposable People." The one-day bioethics conference will precede the LFL annual national conference, which continues Nov. 12-13 at the same location. Conference registration fee is $50. Back to top SPECIAL MISSION PRESENTATIONS AT MISSION CENTRAL Nebraska District Mission Developer Gary Thies shares the following mission update and invitation to a special mission presentation at Mission Central in Mapleton, Iowa. "In the country of Kyrgyzstan, located in southeastern Russia next to the Chinese boarder, LCMS missionaries have been called to establish new congregations! This is a totally new country to work in after the fall of the Soviet Union! Our LCMS mission department had projected that by this time we should have established eight new congregations. Well, our God can do some amazing things. I received an e-mail from our missionaries in this country this past week, and they do not have eight congregations as planned....God has opened 31 - yes, 31 - new congregations in this remote area of the world...praise God! We have two wonderful missionary families in this country. Rev. Bob and Sue Pfeil are in charge of the little seminary in this country, and they will be coming to Mission Central, located 2 miles east of Mapleton, Iowa, and will speak and show pictures of their work at 7:00 p.m. on August 22. Then, on September 6 at 7:00 p.m., Rev. Tim and Rita Nickel, evangelistic missionaries from Kyrgyzstan, will show their pictures and tell the story of establishing new congregations in this amazing land! Rev. Tim Nickel grew up at Bancroft, Nebraska, and graduated from West Point high school. This is a wonderful opportunity to see what God is doing to touch the lives of people around the world with His message of love, grace and salvation for the people of the former Soviet Union. Mark your calendars - the staff at Mission Central would love to see you." Back to top OPEN ARMS CONFERENCE: OUTREACH TO THE OUTER CITY The Open Arms Institute is presenting a conference on "Outreach to the Outer City: Establishing Beachheads in Suburbia," October 7-8, 2005, at The Embassy Suites Hotel in Dulles, Virginia. Inner city churches are struggling or dying. Our denominational membership is declining. Yet hundreds of new suburbs are growing up around our metropolitan areas without a confessional Lutheran presence. Non-churched families are increasing in numbers. What can we do about it? Church planting with childcare is a proven, successful response to these opportunities. An Open Arms Conference is the place to learn about it. The host for the conference is Our Savior's Way Lutheran Church and Open Arms Child Development Center in Ashburn, VA. Our Savior's Way and its Open Arms Center have successfully established "a beachhead in suburbia." They are replicating the process in nearby Leesburg. It began with their attendance at an Open Arms conference. Learn the strategies that brought them success under God's blessing. Dialogue with those who have undertaken this exciting and innovative approach. Topics covered include: - "Gospel Outreach With Childcare," What does this mean? - How Can We Assure Quality and Success? - Where Can We Go For Help? - Does It Really Work? - What Should We Do When We Return Home? - What is the Process? It is important to bring a team if possible. One person cannot absorb it all, nor persuade an entire congregation upon returning home. The registration deadline is September 15. For more information or for a registration form, contact the Open Arms Institute at 970-667-3249, openarmsinstitute at msn.com, or visit www.openarmsinstitute.org . Pastor and Becky were in a motorcycle accident on Sunday, August 21. We thank God for being with them and keeping them from serious injury or death. We pray that He would continue to bless them with His gift of healing as they did sustain injuries. Pastor Carretto broke his right arm and shattered the same wrist. Becky suffered two fractured vertebrae in the crash. They are both likely to return home from the hospital today and continue bed rest and recuperation there. We join with them and their congregation in asking the Great Physician to send comfort and healing at this time. Cards and notes may be sent to Rev. Back to top "COME TO THE LIGHT" EVENT SEPTEMBER 10-11 IN LINCOLN As a church what we remember most about the terrorist attack on the United States was the spiritual hunger that it created for people...both those who were regular church goers and many who were not. On the evening of September 11, 2001, District churches and thousands like them across the United States experienced something almost unheard of. Without any advertising, phone-calling, or persuasion, people showed up at church for worship. It was clear that they knew where to go in such a time of tragedy. In fact, for several months following, church attendance was "up" across our country, and then almost as quickly attendance began to fade. The crowds went back to business as usual. This is where Lincoln's "Come to the Light" event comes in. This fall, September 11 will fall on a Sunday. Messiah Lutheran Church, Lincoln, believes that given this fact, the church has a unique opportunity to remind our nation of the spiritual calling the terrorist attacks have placed upon the Christian Church. The members of Messiah desire to light a match under the spiritual community, and have planned three events with the prayer that people will participate in these events, and come from them with a renewed fervor for the Lord - showing His Light to the community and to the world! The first event will be held on Friday, September 9, at Lincoln Lutheran Middle School/High School. There will be an all-school assembly attended by Lincoln Lutheran youth as well as youth from other public and/or private schools around Lincoln. Dr. Greg Selz, a professor at Concordia, Irvine, California, will be speaking to the youth about what it means to be "the light" of Christ in a dark world. The youth will then have opportunity to speak together about how they can put into practice what they learned through Dr. Selz. That same evening at Messiah Lutheran Church there will be a concert by Lost and Found. Right Lane Vacant will also be playing at the concert. For more information concerning the September 9 event, visit http://thespiderman.com . The second event will be a prayer event that will take place on Saturday, September 10, beginning at 8:00 p.m. at Sea Crest Park on 70th and A Streets, Lincoln. Just follow the spotlight! At 8:00 p.m. there will be praise and worship singing, and at 8:45 until 9:30 p.m. there will be concentrated prayer time for our nation, our community, and our churches. Following the prayer time there will be time for more music and singing. The music at this event will be provided by groups from Concordia, Seward, and our local churches. The third event will be Sunday, September 11. Messiah will host a worship service at the State Fair Grounds in the open arena. This service will be from 4:30 - 5:30 p.m. with music beginning at 4:00 pm. Our guest speaker for this event is Pastor Scott Schmieding, who will share his faith story. Pastor Schmieding suffered cancer of the tongue several years ago. As a result, he had to have his tongue removed, which, of course, would mean an end to his ability to preach. But God had other plans! Using a tongue made out of muscle flap and many, many hours of speech therapy, Pastor Scott now proclaims the Gospel of Jesus Christ in a very powerful way! His testimony will inspire us all to take opportunity to tell others of God's amazing love! Back to top GROUNDBREAKING FOR NEW UNIVERSITY HOUSING AT CONCORDIA Concordia University, Nebraska will hold a groundbreaking at 4:30 p.m. on September 1 for a 144-bed apartment style housing unit, University officials announced Monday. "It is extremely exciting that soon our students will have the amenities of an apartment while just a short walk from their classes and campus events. This investment is evidence of the board's commitment to making and keeping students our number one priority. . . . We look forward to having the facility ready for use when classes begin next fall," said Concordia President Brian Friedrich. The plan for the building project is part of a broad campus housing upgrade which will include improvements such as providing air-conditioning in all residence halls and other technological enhancements. In June the University's Board of Regents gave approval for the new complex, in July The Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod's Board for University Education provided their authorization and on August 22 the Board of Directors of the LCMS gave final approval. For more information about the University, visit www.cune.edu . Back to top RESPONSE TO THE AUGUST TORNADOS One LCMS member died and more than 300 homes were destroyed or damaged in a tornado that ripped through Stoughton in southern Wisconsin Thursday, August 18, according to Rev. Thomas Petersen, pastor of Good Shepherd-by-the-Lake Lutheran Church. Harold Orlofske, 54, was killed when his house collapsed as he and his wife, Peggy, ran into their basement, Petersen said. On Friday, the Orlofske family -- which includes daughter Joyce, 23, and son Alan, 18 -- was homeless and searching for housing, said Petersen, who ministered to the family. LCMS World Relief/Human Care Executive Director Matthew Harrison immediately approved a $3,000 emergency grant to the Good Shepherd congregation to assist the Orlofske family in transitioning to temporary housing. This was the second such tornado-recovery assistance LCMS World Relief/Human Care provided within days. Earlier in the week, Harrison approved a $5,000 emergency grant to Trinity Lutheran Church, Gillette, Wyo., after a tornado struck the nearby community of Wright on August 13, destroying 82 homes and leaving one LCMS-member family homeless. Harrison also is in contact with South Wisconsin District President Ronald E. Meyer about additional assistance needs and with Lutheran Disaster Response Executive Director Heather Feltman to coordinate and plan for long-term recovery. Officials say the search for housing in Stoughton, a community with a population of 10,000, may be hampered by the large loss of homes: 35 destroyed and 300 seriously damaged, according to reports. Good Shepherd and Orphan Grain Train have mobilized to assist tornado victims by providing meals and other basic needs at the church. Jo Petersen, the pastor's wife, is coordinating the effort to meet immediate physical needs while her husband provides spiritual and emotional pastoral care. On August 20, Rev. Carlos Hernandez, LCMS World Relief/Human Care's director of districts and congregations, traveled to Stoughton to conduct an on-site assessment of immediate and long-term needs. He preached at Good Shepherd the next day, sharing words of comfort with the congregation and assurances of help from LCMS World Relief/Human Care, as needed. Roger and Peggy Klocksheim, who live in Wright, Wyo., and are members of Trinity, Gillette, and their three children were living in a motel after a tornado destroyed their home August 13, according to their pastor, Rev. Scott Firminhac. The LCMS World Relief/Human grant will assist the family with housing needs. Two people died in that tornado, dozens were injured and 82 homes were destroyed in this coal-mining town of 1,400, according to Firminhac and published reports. "St. Paul wrote, 'Let us do good to all, especially those of the household of the faith.' Our prayers are with the folks hit by these storms, and we'll do our best to assist, thanks to many, many faithful LCMS donors," Harrison said. To assist survivors of these tornadoes, call the LCMS Credit Card Gift Line, 888-930-4438, or send your gift to LCMS World Relief, P.O. Box 66861, St. Louis, MO 63166-9810. Back to top NEW FROM CONCORDIA PUBLISHING HOUSE Christmas Resources/Books A Shepherd's Christmas is a traditional Advent/Christmas worship service for children to learn about God's mercy and grace through the gift of His Son, Jesus. A Shepherd's Christmas from Concordia Publishing House uses the Quempas Carol, which finds its origin in a beautiful German Christmas eve custom. The Quempas celebration places children around the church to sing and offer readings and responses centered on the beloved Luke 2 account of Christ's birth. A Shepherd's Christmas puts the children in the role of the shepherds, sharing what they have seen and heard with the congregation. Customizable materials fit the needs of every congregation. For churches large and small, only one CD-ROM is needed. The CD-ROM contains: -- Children's Christmas Service. Recitations, carols, costume directions, and more to help teachers easily guide children through the service and the lessons. -- Director's copy of the service. It's a replica of the service with recitations for the director to follow, along with important tasks and tips to help the service run smoothly. -- Advent and Christmas sermon series. Unites the congregation in the theme and celebration of Christmas and familiarizes children with the music of the Christmas service throughout the season of Lent. -- Advent Orders of Service. Midweek services correlate with the sermon series and focus the congregation on the shepherd's theme. -- Early Childhood Christmas Program. Incorporating the text of the new Christmas story book, The Shepherd's Christmas Story, this delightful program for preschools and daycare centers shares the Christmas message through familiar Christmas songs and carols, fingerplays, banner patterns, and brief recitations. -- Hymn recordings and lyrics. Hymns and carols are recorded by a children's choir to help children learn the music. Includes downloadable musical scores. The Shepherd's Christmas Story picture book is a captivating portrayal of the humble shepherds who witnessed the joyful announcement of Jesus' birth. Delightful narrative and charming pictures show children the awe and tremendous joy the shepherds experienced as they listened to the angel's message. The inexpensive, paperback version of The Shepherd's Christmas Story is a wonderful gift for children to remind them of the profound meaning of the Christmas service. Over the years an increasing body of evidence has arisen to challenge Mormon history. In Who Really Wrote The Book of Mormon: The Spalding Enigma, three authors examine key historical documents and records of nineteenth-century Mormon history. The authors conjecture that someone has adapted and embellished an obscure historical novel by Revolutionary War veteran Solomon Spalding and used it to create The Book of Mormon. Explore the findings and their ramifications in Who Really Wrote The Book of Mormon? Wayne Cowdrey, Howard Davis, and Arthur Vanick are laypersons who have conducted extensive research into the origins of The Book of Mormon and Mormonism. Back to top LUTHERAN RELIEF EFFORTS FOR HURRICANE VICTIMS As damage assessments are just beginning to take place in hurricane-hit areas of the Southeast, Lutheran Disaster Response, LCMS World Relief and Human Care, and Orphan Grain Train are standing ready to respond. At this time, it is not safe to return or visit the worst hit areas, but as damage reports come in, response efforts will be organized and the information will be shared. These entities are in the process of initiating immediate emergency relief efforts and developing immediate and long-term response plans. Please continue to keep the victims and rescue workers in your prayers. Following is information shared by LCMS Southern District President Kurtis Schultz yesterday, as well as a portion of a statement by President Kieschnick: Alabama - Loss of power and much flooding in Mobile and Birmingham. Mississippi - Fifty or more deaths in Harrison County (Gulfport) and great damage in Biloxi, reminiscent of Hurricane Camille in 1969. Louisiana - Unknown death totals at this time. Many communities are under water. Hundreds of people were rescued from rooftops. Seventy people stayed in the basement of St. Paul Lutheran Church in New Orleans during the storm. St. Paul's steeple fell on its school building, causing major damage to these historic structures. Many downtown windows were blown out. Atonement Lutheran Church in Metairie had 5 feet of water in its buildings. The LCMS Southern District office building is thought to have sustained heavy damage. More reports of damage are coming in. No reports of loss of life of LCMS members have been received to date. "It is obvious that the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina is of unprecedented proportions. I trust that the response of love and care by the people of congregations of The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod, which has already begun, will also be unprecedented in its magnitude. The people of the LCMS are encouraged to give generously in financial support and also, as appropriate, of their time and talent to assist those in need, showing the compassion of Christ. We trust that even in the midst of this tragedy, the words of St. Paul in Romans chapter eight are true, that 'in all things God works for the good of those who love him...' Please keep all affected by this devastating storm in your prayers." For congregations wishing to provide monetary donations, gifts may be directed to: LCMS World Relief/Human Care P.O. Box 66861, St. Louis, MO 63166-9810 Checks should be designated "2005 Hurricanes." Gifts may also be made over the credit card gift line, 1-888-930-4438. Back to top NEW "FRIENDSHIP ABLAZE!" MATERIALS AVAILABLE A new, comprehensive set of resources for friendship evangelism outreach is available at http://www.friendshipablaze.com/. Materials include detailed planning guides, sermon outlines, PowerPoint presentations, and Bible studies, along with helps for school outreach, prayer, and assimilation. User discussion forums are also on the site. The resources can be viewed on the website pages, downloaded free from the site, or purchased in print format. These materials were prepared * thanks to a generous grant from Thrivent Financial for Lutherans; * at the request of Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod (LCMS) District and Congregational Services--Outreach Ministry, in support of the ABLAZE! initiative; and * under the direction of The Center for U.S. Missions, Rev. Michael R. Ruhl, Executive Director. They were written to encourage and enable congregations to equip their members to reach out with the love of Jesus Christ and embrace their unchurched friends. Material for a Friendship Sunday outreach is included as part of an overall, ongoing Friendship outreach focus. The title Friendship Ablaze! was chosen because these materials support the Ablaze! initiative, a worldwide mission movement of The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod to share the Good News of Jesus with 100 million unreached or uncommitted people, 50 million of them in the United States, by the 500th anniversary of the Reformation in 2017. The materials are available for free download from the downloads library on the website listed above. Printed copies, in a 3-ring binder, are available at a cost of $40 plus shipping from the Center for U.S. Missions. Order from the Center's secure website, or contact the Center at 949-854-8002 x1780; 1530 Concordia West, Irvine, California 92612; or office at centerforusmissions.org. Back to top LOOKING FOR CONGREGATIONS THAT HAVE SERMONS ONLINE Lou Ann Miller, a webmaster for a sister LCMS congregation in Illinois, is looking to gather a database of churches that have their sermons online. She would like to make available a listing on a webpage that folks can visit to hear, read, or watch sermons from various LCMS churches across the country. Her hope is to create a listing that would increase the number of people who are reached by God's Word through congregational websites, reaching those who think it is a great idea to have access to a new sermon or two a day, or those who stumble onto it and hear it for the first time. Even those homebound with computer access would benefit. Once her list is compiled, she will share that webpage and that link will be passed along through an Update. Then congregations could also link from their websites to her list and have access to these sermons from around Synod. If your congregation has sermons on its website and you would like to be included on her list, please send Lou Ann the direct URL to the sermon page, whether it is written archive, MP3, streaming sound, or even video. These links can be sent to turtlelam at insightbb.com. Back to top 50 DAYS ABLAZE! SMALL GROUP STUDY MATERIALS AVAILABLE The 50 Days Ablaze! Back to top MUSIC HELP FOR CONGREGATIONS WITHOUT ORGANISTS For the last year, St. John Lutheran Church in Maryville, Illinois, has been working on a project to provide music for smaller churches that are without either an organ or organist. Their product is called the "Virtual Organist" and is meant not as a replacement for traditional musicians, but rather as an alternative to help those parishes that go week after week with no music. The "Virtual Organist" from Church Music Solutions is a versatile digital device that can be used to assist congregations that lack an in-house musician. The "Virtual Organist" can either function as a stand-alone 25-rank digital organ or can play back your church's existing instrument. The "Virtual Organist" features a simple, intuitive user interface designed for the non-musician. The music for each Sunday arrives via CD-ROM, and is played back either through your existing instrument or on the included digital organ. To find out more information and to hear samples of a congregation singing with their product, please go to: www.churchmusicsolutions.com .
